Hey all. New to the Forum. Seems like a pretty neat site. Anyways I just purchased a '69 evinrude sportwin 9.5 hp outboard motor. They guy I bought it from hasnt run it in about 5 years. I took out to a local lake when I first got it and it ran great. No problems. The second time I took it out I had a bit of a problem. It ran great for the first hour then it started running like crap. It wouldnt run unless the choke was out and when I pushed the choke in the engine would die. So I took it out into the backyard and stuck it into a trash can of water. Same thing at first and it also threw a lot of smoke and it made a popping/skipping noise. We finally got it to run without the choke on. We sprayed the carb down with a bunch of carb cleaner. I believe the 24:1 gas/oil ratio the guy told me to run in it was wayyy to lean. So me and my father diluted it with some more gasoline. Anways once we sprayed the carb down and diluted it a bit it seemed to run much better. So yesterday I took it back out to the back yard and stuck it in a trash can of water. It seemed to run great for a half hour or so then it started making the popping/skipping noise. I decided to dump the old gas out and start with new fresh fuel. I also drained the gas line. After talking to a bunch of guys they all suggested running a 50:1 ratio. So thats what I did. At first it still made the popping/skipping noise. It did this for about 5 minutes. It was getting dark so i put it all away. This morning I went out and put it in a can of water again. It wouldnt run unless the choke was pulled out. I finally got it to run with the choke off about 5 minutes later. After that it ran good. About every half hour I went back out and fired it up and it would start the first pull. I dont know anything about outboards so I was wondering what the problem sounds like to you guys? Thank you in advance...

It sounds like you probably have carb and or ignition issues. Usually it is best to do the following to any motor that has been sitting arround for a while:

- rebuild carb, replace fuel lines
- check/clean/regap pointsm, check condensors (best even to replace)
- replace water pump impeller
- change lower unit lube

The "top secret" stickey thread in this forum is loaded with good information regarding performing this service. Also, watch out for exhaust leaks on those old 9.5s. If it only runs good with the cover off, you have an exhaust leak that is suffocating the motor.

Re: 69 evinrude sportwin 9.5hp problem

I took it out tonight with my father and ran it wide open 20 mins upstream and 20 mins downstream. Fished a few holes in between. It only took me 4-5 pulls to get it going and then once I ran it for a few mins and shut it off it would start up on the first pull everytime. I dont understand it?...It was only the second time I ran it since I got it. The first time since I changed my gas/oil ratio to 50:1. Made me happy to see it run so good. Strange though...

A 1969 motor is supposed to run on 50:1
The first guy gave you bad advice.

From: http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/About.Us/FAQ/Oil.Fuel.htm?popup=true
Q - What is the fuel/oil mix for my motor?
A - The following is generally true: 1958 and prior used 20:1, 1959 thru 1963 used 24:1, 1964 and newer use 50:1. High performance usage (racing) requires a ratio of 25:1. New engine break-in (not DI) requires 25:1.

Glad to hear it is running better but you should get a factory service manual and definitely change your impeller before it falls apart and causes you a world of trouble. For that matter McGR has given you good advice and you should follow it. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: 69 evinrude sportwin 9.5hp problem

The 9.5 twins always run like junk when they are ran in a can or on the muffs, the engine sits low enough that usually sits there and sucks in it's own exhaust fumes. When in the water the exhaust is in the water so all the engine get's is fresh air...

The 9.5's are known for their share of ignition issues, so it's a good idea to pull the flywheel and check the condition of the coils, points and condensors...

Also I notice while running my own 1972 9.5 that the fuel pump had a hard time drawing in fuel as the fuel tank was on the ground and the engine up on a saw horse. Since the can was below the 20" or so maximum height of engine location vs. fuel tank location the engine would lean out a "pop"... A problem I never have in the boat...

Getting a OEM shop manual is a must if you are going to do your own service work... Ebay is a great place to get one for under $30.00 or so...

Good luck...

Do not forget to check the spark plug. A new one might help it crank easier cold and a carb rebuild would not hurt anything.
