Got a second chance offer on this motor

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...30288537785&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:MOTORS:1123

Any thing in particular to look for about this engine? What is an electric choke? He says in the description that it has excellnt comprpession and spark and is willing to demonstrate. Is there a way I can spray some starter fluid(carb cleaner to get it to fire?) I am guessing this is a dumb question even as I type this but the whole electric choke thing has me a bit confused.

With a manual start motor, you would pull a choke knob to cold-start the motor. An electric start motor has an electric choke so you can start it from up-front in the boat (or wherever your controls are). Not to get excited about, he said he has replaced it, so it should be good to go.

There is no reason for any starting fluid on a motor that runs properly. He said he'd demonstrate, that's better than you will get from many.

Re: '69 Johnson 33 HP

Maybe I missed something here,

"This is for a 33HP Johnson Outboard motor with electric start. The model # is 33EL69A and the serial # is J3124247. I purchased this motor to restore and have replaced the coils, spark plug wires and electric choke. It has spark on both cylinders and turns over well with great compression. I have run out of time getting it done and need to sell it."

I took this not to mean that it ran but turned over well, and had good spark . I asked him:

Hi , can you tell me weather or not this had the controls with start key? I do not recall. Also what do you think it'd take to get this running. I have a '59 super sea horse but it is not electric so that was my main attraction to yours. Also why did the winner back out? Thanks, Brian

he answered:

I have the harness and the key. I do not believe it will take much since it has good spark, compression, new coils etc.

It'd have to be a fuel problem if the other two are great though, that was why I was wondering if I should spray some starter fluid to get it to run a little bit. Maybe it is not even necessary. Don't know what else I would find out about it . Just incouraging to hear soemwhitng run at least a little before you buy (especially when it is old). Maybe I am going into overkill, I dunno

If the price was $103 i would buy it running or not, with those stats she probably will run with a carb rebuild and the starter is worth a hundred alone. Spraying in engine start is not a good idea, that is a last ditch emergency effort. That stuff eats up bearings and rings. Electric choke is a nice feature for remote steering. Good luck whatever happens. Ronnie

only spray premixed fuel into a 2 stroke carb, it will start with that. starter spray is an eazy way to ruin a motor.

Thanks TD , that is good to know. I am gonna buy it . What would be the prefered way to spray said fuel mix? Just a regular squirt bottle mister? Is there a better way ? Thanks for the advice guys.

If I were close enough to the seller to pick the motor up, your question would be moot, because it would already be in my shop. Based on the parts that the seller has put in it, it worth every bit of $103 and more.

Ha! Yeah , I hear ya . I lost this auction by like 4 bux and was really bummed . Then a week later got a second chance as the other winner got laid off so he backed out. I think I could sell this easily around here for 400 running but I will keep it and enjoy it . I got a '69 arrow glass I have redone over the winter that is the perfect compliment!
