Re: 69 johnson?

Does it stay running if the blub is soft? The thermastat is usaly ontop of the cylinder head and isa little square box. If it needs a thermastat it might not pump water to cool the motor. Id check out see if its pumping water out the side were it should come out. If its not then it prob needs a impeller or a thermastat. If it dosnt stay running while the bulb is soft then it prob needs a carb kit and a carb cleaning.

Hope this helps

The model number, 25203, is for a 1972 Evinrude 25hp, Jethro.

Must have swapped bonnets sometime in its life.

Re: 69 johnson?

You're likely looking at unburnt fuel/oil there. If it's just a little hole that's a weep hole to drain water out of the exhaust sections. Take a little in your fingers and smell it. Gas/burnt smell is unburnt fuel/oil. Lower unit oil has a strange smell which is hard to describe, but it's different.

Worth replacing the lower unit fluid anyway soon to see if there's signs of water intrusion and just to change the oil.
