Well, when I changed my lower unit lube, I had water in the lower unit again. I had changed the shiftshaft bushing and seal, and all the seals for the waterpump and driveshaft in the spring. I do remember that the driveshaft had a bit of grooving, so I am thinking it may need to be sleeved. Does anyone have first hand knowledge on how you do this and where you get the part? The shift shaft may have had some pitting as well, but I can't remember for sure and won't know until I tear it down again.

I've gotta tell you ... those seals are not going to last on a rough shaft.

DHP

Yeah, I know. Thats okay, its still cheaper to resolve this than buying a new motor...

Re: 69 Merc 1250 lower unit water intrusion issue

Jason. I had an old evimrude motor that had substantial driveshaft wear. I didn't know anything about sleeving and I didn't have much money. I took it to a machine shop and had them build up the area area by welding a bead around the groove. Then they turned it back down on a lathe. They were able to get it so close that it sealed well. I ran it pretty hard for three years after that with no more intrusion.

Jason, we use redi-sleeves to repair that damage all the time you don't even have to tear the unit down just take the lower pump hsg off. There are a couple of differant manufacters so ck around and by the widest sleeve--Bob

Thanks Laddies. Any place in particular I can find these things, or should checking my local Merc shop do the trick?

The best place would be a autoparts store, our store sells, National seals and seal sleeves, but most seal companys market them, they are sold by size so if you don't know, or can't measure yours ck the book for the ID of the seal---Bob

Nice piece there Jason. I myself took on a project boat, but didn't start with any before pics. New floor, carpet, seats, lights, and one the second project motor. Like yourself, I've got a water intrusion issue on my 73 Merc 650. Just replaced the water pump today, fired it up on the muffs, drained the lube and still have water in the gear case. Being the novice marinist I am, I running a little short on ways to resolve the issue. Anyway glad to see your project, and want to congratulate you on a job well done, twice!
