ok so recently i had some trouble with my lower unit first it was begining to to become very hard to shift or even to the point where it wouldn't even shift gears and then the last time i went to start it my water pump gave up the ship and it finally wouldn't go into reverse at all. ok so maybe its time I should take apart the lower unit and do some maintenance after all its been about 20 years since its ever even seen a repair shop and i dont think the lower units ever been serviced other than oil changes i have done.

so I start doing everything the repair manual says and i get the prop off, then drop the lower unit and get the water pump out and every thing seems to be going pretty good a little siezed but nothing a rubber mallet wont break loose then i start trying to get to the gears to inspect them and run straight into trouble. first it starts with the big nut that holds everything in but with a little pb and a long pipe on a special tool for it i manage to get it loose and out then i get stuck on the next part. according to the manual after removing that giant nut like thing I should take prop shaft and put it in a vise between two pieces of wood and the just tap on the lower unit between the cavitation plate and the gear housing and the bearing carrier should slide right out but tapping on it aint gonna do squat. i tried using a bigger hammer with a block of wood but it couldnt budge it either. i am afraid to hit it to much because i dont want to screw it up. does any one have any experience with these that might be able to give me some advice. can i use a puller on it and just pull the carrier out right over top of the prop shaft or does the prop shaft and carrier have to come out as one piece.
