I have a 1969 Mercury 1000. The reverse lock is stuck in the latched position. I have put it in forward (supposed to release), neutral, reverse and it will not release. The only way I can tilt the motor is to pull the trim pin. I'm also worried about running in forward with the motor locked down. Any ideas on how to release the revese lock or what could cause this. Thanks.

It's either stuck on the shaft the dogs piviot on or you will need to drop the unit and check the release cam.

Thanks Laddies, when you say "release cam" is that the same cam that acts on the pushrod, pushing it up or allowing it to fall, that ultimately moves the latch on or off the trim pin? Is there only one cam associated with the reverse lock?

Re: '69 Mercury 1000 Reverse Lock Stuck

I was just messing with the push rod last night before dropping the lower unit. I had a friend turn the prop while I shifted into reverse. I then proceeded to wiggle the push rod and presto it released. Someone obviously put the cam in wrong so I'm locking down in neutral and forward and releasing in reverse. Laddies thanks for the responses. Any idea how long and/or complicated this job might be.
