69 sportwin 9.5 idle and start problems

So, I just inherited a 1969 9.5hp Evinrude Sportwin model 9922S. It's had the carbs gone through last year(or possibly the year before), water pumps been checked last year and was fine, changed out the spark plugs for new onces this year, got a new fuel line for the tank so that I didn't have to worry about leaks with the old one. The problem is, that there doesn't seem like there's alot of resistance when you pull to start it and it takes alot of pulls before it starts. Once you get it started it doesn't want to idle well, but it seems to run fine at WOT, and good at lower speeds. but again, once you start trying to idle at normal RPMs it sputters a bit and dies.

what I was wondering is, what could be the problem?? Think it would be rings(compression) since there's really no resistence when you're pulling to start the motor? I haven't had a chance to check compression on it yet.

There is a good chance that you sre running on one cylinder at least part of the time. Compare the appearance of the spark plugs - they should be similar. Try pulling the plug wires off one at a time and see if it makes a difference.

You could have a partially blocked high speed jet. Or you may need to adjust your lean/rich setting.

To start the 9.5 cold:
squeeze the primer bulb until firm;
with the motor in neutral, turn the tiller arm counterclockwise to the stop;
pull out the choke;
pull the starter.

hmmm...it doesn't seem like it's running on once cylinder. it's running really smooth if it is...well except at idle. I'll try the spark plugs later today. We've tried adjusting the lean/rich setting. thanks

alright, I'll double check that. thanks for the tip. That wouldn't cause the low resistance and the hard(repetitive pulling of cord with little resistance) starting would it??

Your getting good advice on this from (from what I've seen on this forum) our very own 9.5 headmaster. By all means check the compression re: the lack of resistance. Record the numbers, do a seafoam treatment and then check compression again to see if it made a difference. If your carb. is clean, adjusting the slow speed needle will make a difference. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: 69 sportwin 9.5 idle and start problems

Hello..I am no fan of the 9.5 motors for sure..That being said, from what i hear, they can be great runners. I had a very similar issue to what you describe on a 1970 9.5, and after re-building carbs, fuel pump, exhaust gasket, cleaning points, changing fuel hose,etc.. etc.. i discovered the plug wire entering one of the coils was shorting just a bit. Not enough to prevent running, but caused a poor idle. Good Luck.

Re: 69 sportwin 9.5 idle and start problems

Thanks for all the advice guys. it seems that it was an issue with spark. one plug no longer fires at all. I have it over at a friends place right now(he owns a boat repair shop and knows these motors front and black, while blind folded). Should have it back in a few days and will know what it was for sure then. Sorry I hadn't gotten back any time sooner, been way to busy with work and things. Thanks for all the advice and help!
