i would use the 6hp with a 3 gallon tank, that could possibly go under a seat.

If you want an Johnson/Evinrude with a built in tank you will be stuck with a 1.5-4 hp. Can you put the tank in the bow and run an extra long hose? Either way I'd expect 6 hp is about the max rating for that boat. 300 lbs isn't much weight. Hope you travel alone!

A 6hp should move it nicely. I would not go up more than that. As said earlier a small 3 gallon tank should work out well in there.

Re: 6hp evinrude on 12ft jon boat

I had a yamaha enduro 10hp in my 10ft john boat. I had a 6 gal tank and a deep cycle battery for my trollng motor at the bow of it. I was really pushing it with another adult on it. Lucky me there was a 35 hp restriction where I lived during that time. I would have not survived 2 or 3 2 foot waves in a row. I guess what I am saying is that 10 is possible but risky. In a lake with no hp restriction I would not go larger than the 6hp.

My dad's '73 Lund 12' Jon is rated for ten though the tag has faded to un readable over the years. I will try my 18 Fastwin on 'er one day!

A 1975 12' Sears Gamefisher was rated for 10hp maximum and weighed 135 pounds. Using the rating system of that period that would be the equivalent of around 9HP by today's standard: http://www.iboats.com/Sears__12_Gamefisher_Dlx.__1975/bp/64b123805r1

The 1992 12' Gamefisher lists for 15HP maximum so it seems that it would depend on the design of the specific model year. That boat weighed 255 pounds: http://www.iboats.com/Sears__61342_V_Gamefisher__1992/bp/64b124145r2

A 6HP motor on a lightweight semi V 12' hull will work OK if the setup is correct and if the propeller has the correct pitch for the load. I would go as low as possible on pitch initially for maximum thrust and to lower the risk of lugging the engine.

What 12' jon boat? What width at the bottom and across the gunwales? If it's one of those shallow, narrow ones, that 6hp is about the largest you'll ever need. 2 persons and 300 lb. says to me that it's one of the skinny narrow ones. There should be a maximum horsepower on the same tag. Stick to that.

Yea, I agree with CATransplant. 6 horsepower is about the maximum horsepower you want on that boat. Not only is weight a factor, but stress on the transom is another issue to look at. The more horsepower, the more stress it will get. However, if you want to ad a little bit more horsepower and not add any weight, then get you a 1958 Fleetwin 7.5hp on there. Those were nice reliable motors and about the same weight of the 6hp.
