6hp Evinrude runs then quits

I have a 1970 Evinrude 6hp Fisherman, #6002B-E11128. It starts & runs for 5 minutes or so and then just dies. Squeeze the bulb and it will run again for the same amount. I replaced the fuel pump last year with no improvement. 2 years ago I had the water pump/impeller replaced and the carburator serviced. What should be the next step? Thanks in advance for your ideas.

First thing I would have said was defective fuel pump! I think you have to look at that again.

However air ingress into the fuel line could be the cause. Any joint between the tank and the fuel pump could be the cause although prime suspect would be the fuel connector to the engine. Any signs of fuel leaking if the bulb is gently pressurised?

I went out to check that. No leaks that I saw or felt. I did have to replace the fuel line from the tank to the motor... Isn't OEM and it is a larger diameter but the connectors are the same. Could that be an issue?

sticking float needle, not opening under fuel pump pressure, but is forced open when bulb is squeezed.

Ethanol and fuel lines
replace all fuel line with Alcohol resistant lines. Ethanol deteriorates, the rubber lines, then they start to sluff off on the inside, going directly to the carbs. Settling to the bottom of the bowl. Contaminating the carbs high speed jets. clean a rebuild carbs, flushing fuel line before connecting to carbs.

The fuel line is rated for Alcohol. It's stamp on the side of it. I can try a new carb kit and/or fuel pump again. Hate spending on stuff I already did but if that's the issue I'll give it a shot. Hey, thanks for the ideas thogh guys. Hopefully I get it right this time.

Don't just chuck money at it. Diagnose the problem.

TD may well be right about the float needle but how to confirm??

If the pump is OK then it should give a spurt of fuel if you disconnect the fuel line from the carb and pull it over. Will have to prime it all first though with the bulb. If no spurt of fuel then the pump is probably at fault, but if fuel is pumped out then take a look at that float valve

Check the pulse connection to the pump. Could that be blocked ?

Where is the pulse connection? Is it coming directly from the motor? Should I feel pressure/vacuum at that connection?

It's directly though the fuel pump mounting.

All the symptoms suggest that the pump is not working although you have fitted a new one.

I was just a straw to clutch at but something easy to check. But try what I suggest re getting spurts of fuel from the pump. If you do then its not a blocked pulse connection. If you dont then whip the pump off and check and also check the gasket between the pump and the crankcase.

If you can prove that the pump is working then go for TD's suggestion about the needle valve. (Later models have a little clip between the needle and the float arm to pull the valve open when the float drops but as far as I can see this one doesn't so the needle could stick in the closed position as he suggests)
