I have Johnson 6hp 6r-72d S/N j3547013. I have built the carb on this thing and it was running pretty good but smoked alot. I thought I had a bad fuel mix so I mixed it again and still same problem. Checked the fuel pump and that cleared that up and it even runs lot better now. The only problem I have now is that it will not restart after just shutting it down. After I shut it down I have to use the trolling motor if I want to move for at least 30 mins then I can get it to restart. I am pretty sure that it is a j6 plug and I am mixing the fuel 50:1. Is there another fuel or diferent plug I might be able to use. Maybe another sugestion.
Thank You,
Greg

J6C is proper plug, 50 : 1 is proper mixture, suggest readjusting you float on the needle valve, i have the same motor, and had the same problem, it was flooding it's self. i widened the gap on the open side of the float just a little wider than the hinged side. this closed the needle a little quicker.

Re: 6hp hard to restart

I am trying to get a mental picture of what you meen by widening it. I noticed when I built this carb that the when the float was all the way up it was not straight across the base of the carb, as is the case with most carbs I have worked with. This one when the float was all the way up (the needle was closed) the float still angled down some. When you mention widening it I am picturing bending the float plate to the point of the float being straight across the base of the carb. This might make sense to close it sooner so that it does not fload but I am not sure if that is what you ment by widening it. Thank you for the tip and let me know if we are talking about the same adjustment.

when the carb is upside down, you want a little more space on the free end of the float, than the hinged end, also when the float sits like your it can hit the top of the float chamber and not seal the needle completely. adjust the float plate.

Ok I will pull it and let you know how it works. I might post some pictures if I need further clarification.

you might also want to idle for a minute before turning the engine off - also, for a flooding condition I've found I can close the throttle and pull the start rope a few times and then I can start it with the regular start procedure for a warm engine. I think it just blows the gas out the exhaust, not the most environmentally friends, but in a pinch.

If you're unsure if the hard start is due to flooding, shoot some pre-mix down the throat of the carb. If it pops, then it's not flooding...rather too lean.

That might be quicker to confirm rather than tearing down your carb.
