My 67 Johnson 6HP has a leak in the L/U at the prop shaft seal. I've asked two outboard mechanics about repairing it but both said repairs of this nature to this type motor works "about half the time". I've been reading all posts I could find on here and checked the parts diagram on the Evinrude web site and ordered a seal kit to do it myself. I found where apparently some fishing line got wrapped around the prop shaft and looks to have messed up the seal. There is also a slight groove on the shaft close to where the back of the seal is. Two questions (1) Why was I told these repairs only work half the time? (2) Do you think I'll have a problem with my repair? Although this motor is 40 yrs old, it had low hours on it when I bought it 34 yrs ago and hasn't been used that much since I've had it. Thanks! P.S. Anybody know which prop shafts are interchangable with a 67 Johnson 6hp?

There not hard to replace. Go ahead and do it. If the groove isn't to bad, just polish it smooth as possible with emery cloth.. Another possibility would be to make some sort of thin bushing to have the seal sit a little farther back on the shaft, and avoid the old groove. You could also take it to a Machine shop. They can weld it up/fill it in, then re machine.

I've resealed a half dozen lower units like yours and none of them have failed, yet. Be careful taking the drive shaft seal out of the lower bearing housing. If you break the housing you'll find it isn't the cheapest/easiest thing to replace.

I didn't go look in the books but would wager a small amount that the foot from 65 to 75 would interchange.

Thanks for your replys. When I get this one done I have a 78 Rude I'm goiing to tear into - it looks the same as my 67 Johnson, just looking at it.

I'm pretty sure all the 6hp's had the same lower (1965 to 1979).
