6hp Johnson Too Long

I'm contemplating making my 6 hp long shaft Johnson a shorter shaft to work as a kicker on the back of my fishing boat. Engine Model# 6R-74C, serial# J3936556. I took the lower unit off and removed the spacer. I was thinking of cutting down and rewelding the shaft and shortening the water tube. The problem is the shift shaft. Can I somehow make this shorter and reconnect it?

If that 6 hp is a good running motor otherwise,I would look into trading for comparable one of desired shaft length before I attempted an autopsy.Just my 2 cents.

Might want to look around for a short shaft junker that you could get the parts you need off of. Try E-Bay for one.
