Re: 6hp johnson won't plane out my 10' jon boat
thats a good question, i have no idea, all i can say is it's two man heavy, thats what it took to load in the truck. two more would have been much easier. ps. I'm not computer savvy i thought i was doing good just to post a picture. sorry for any inconvenience i may have caused.
Weight and prop pitch might be your issue. Even if the boat is a "two man lift," its small and you could probably weigh it by getting some help and planting a corner on a bathroom scale, with the boat on end so that all the weight is on the scale. It might be useful to do that, just so you know what your boat's empty weight is.
The 7.25 inch pitch prop that you have isn't helping your situation, but it would be fine for most 10 foot boats. The reason why my 5.5 Johnson pushed a big, heavy sailboat, is because it had a low pitch prop on it and a displacement hull doesn't require much power to move at minimal speeds. As long as I wasn't dealing with seas, a headwind or an opposing tide, it served its purpose in getting me in or out of a slip, or in/out of a harbor.
Getting a boat up on plane is another matter. The good news is that your boat has a flat bottom, which requires much less power than a v-type hull, to plane. The "bad" news, is that your boat is a bit "beefier" than the average 10' jon, so its probably heavier than most, as well. You are also carrying a battery and water in a live well. You could have an extra 100 pounds of weight, just between those two items.
At this point, I think I would go find a prop with less pitch. You can buy one right here at iboats. The one in the following link is 6-1/2" pitch. One thing, however, if your motor is a 1965, this prop won't fit. It will fit later models.

Don't worry about the photos. Everyone puts large photos up the first couple of times. You can resize your originals using the editing tools in Photobucket or with Picasa. Keeping the size down makes it easier to read threads, makes the photos load faster (less band width) and reduces server storage requirements.
