You gotta love those Duck Hunters!! Just got an UGLY 6hp long shaft that (naturally) was rattle-can painted camo, and the transom tag said it is a 6902M. My research says I have a 1969 Evinrude 6hp, however, when I started to clean the thing up, I noticed that:

1. Everything under the cowl is white (including the lower end that is white under the camo paint). There are no white evinrude powerheads of that vintage.
2. This thing has a CD pack on it, and I don't think OMC used those that early.
3. The bolts holding the motor assembly to the transom bracket are new, as are the rubber bushings.

I believe that the only thing Evinrude on this motor is the blue transom bracket, and that it is bolted to a Johnson, but of what vintage? How do I tell?

By the way, these old workhorses are tough, as this one runs like a top! It's just ugly.

Take a look at the freeze plug in the motor. That should have model numbers and/or serial numbers on it.

I can't find a freeze plug anywhere, but I did find two clues.

The stamping on the Cylinder Head is 321606-D1

The CD box has the following: CD2 582452

I am going to do some reverse engineering to find out what it is.

Got it... found the plug with "6R78B" on it. It is a Johnson with an Evuinrude

bracket. And... full of swamp mud in the water jackets. Took the thermostat out,

and ran hard with salt-away for 30 minutes, and cleaned it all out. Now she pumps

very strong, and runs cool. There were parts of crawdads in there!!! Gotta love them duck hunters.
