I have recently received a Johnson 1984 6HP Sailmaster long shaft. Before the season starts here in New England I figured I do some work on the motor.

First, I removed the lower unit gear case oil...very black. Then I started to drop the lower unit for impeller replacement. I broke the long extension bolt but managed to get the lower unit off...however, the drive shaft remained in the upper half of the engine and the shift lever came out of the upper half of the engine. While I'm waiting for the broken bolt to soak in PB Blaster for extraction (It turned a little this morning) I figured I'd ask if this was normal. I thought the drive shaft was supposed to stay in the lower unit....not sure about the shift lever.

Secondly, the tilt/pivot shaft is totally rusted, so much that the motor will bearly pivot. Is there any trick to getting this shaft out? I can't even tell if the rod is threaded as it has been painted over on each end with thick paint. Any help would be great.

Thanks!
