6hp sea king help

I recently bought a 6 hp sea king#vwb19073a. The guy i bought it from said it ran fine but it gets stuck in gear. When i got it home i dropped the lower unit and inspected the linkage everything looked fine. I have not tried to start it yet because it was stuck in forward , I am new to this site and to outbord motors but i just saw on here other motors that had to be runnning to change gears, is this one of them also? Also any info on the year and fuel mix would be appreciated
