Generally speaking if the high speed is too rich it will shudder like it is 4 cycleing, and it may smooth out as it runs but seem slow and smokey.
too lean it will stumble and possibly die when you open the throttle.
To rich idle will be smokey and rough and it may shudder briefly on acceleration.Too lean it may sneeze and be difficult to accelerate until the high speed kicks in.

Experience it yourself, you can't hurt anything. Turn it towrds rich. See how it sounds? Now turn it towards lean. See what happens? Now turn it back towards rich till it runs the best. And it's no longer a mystery.

thanks, when you adjust either way is the response going to instantaneous or should you have to wait a minute or two to listen for the adjustment? last time i ran it it seemed like it would shake/rattle, so i would turn up the throttle to smooth it out and then it would get smokey on me, what does this mean?

It takes a minute or so for any adjustment you make to affect how it runs.
