6wire regulator instead of 5

Hi,

I got a mercury 60hp EFI 2004 which had a 5 wire regulator...had as it turned into smoke. Ordered a new 5wire but got a 6wire which I hooked up

I believe the additional red female wire is a "12v sense" cable for controlling the charge current. Where should I connect that wire? Any good suggestions?

I got an unused purple one coming from the harness that goes to +12v when I turn the igniton key - have not tried to crank (no cooling water).

Should that work? Will try to include a picture.

It doesn't work. If I connect the 6th regulator wire (red) to purple on the picture above it just puts 12v on the purple wire - and hence all instrument lights etc turns on, just as I would've turned the key.

what to do?
