7.4 MERCRUISER ENGINE QUESTION

I AM NEW TO BIG BOATS MY QUESTION IS WHICH ENGINE IS COUNTER ROTATING PORT OR STARBORD AND WHAT MAKES IT COUNTER ROTATING?

Suggest you turn caps lock off. A normal rotation is clock ways when looking at the front of the engine. A counter rotation engine has the crank rotation going counter clockways when looking at the front of the engine. This is done on boats with multiple drives to make the steering easier. If all the thrust goes in one direction it is harder to control.

Addition to Vatter41 - he is standing in front of engine to explain basic engine rotation. <br /><br /> Twin engine inboards - standing “behind boat “ looking at props.<br />The Port prop turns counter clockwise - the Starboard turns clockwise. <br /><br />On older boats this was done by using counter rotating engines, and the same transmission. <br /><br />On newer inboards - 1990 ? Both engines have standard rotation - counter clockwise - and<br />Starboard transmission reverses the rotation from - counter clockwise to - clockwise.<br />( As seen from rear )<br /><br />If talking about reversing outdrives - that’s a new can of worms.
