Well I'll start by saying, it's not my boat, just helping a friend fix up his old 89' Arriva. After breaking in the rebuilt motor from last year, it was time for an oil change. I went with Mobile 1 15w50 and a can of Lucas break in additive per my mechanic's instruction. We only 10 or less hours on the motor right now.
So, being the genius that I am...I bought a cheapo 12 volt oil pump from WalMart. I noticed my dip stick tube does have the "hose" threads, but I figured this $30 pump would work for now. Boy was i wrong! This thing sucks!!!
After lots of spilled oil and pulling what I felt was only 4 or so quarts, I finally gave up and balled up in the engine compartment and pulled the drain plug. I jacked up the tounge to ensure all the oil was out, then filled up with Mobile 1. It only took 5 or 6 quarts, even with a filter change. May still have some old oil in there, but I got all of it out that I could. Oh, and I flushed once with some new random 5w20 and 10w30 I had laying around. I did that before draining and filling w/ the M1. So all in all I got most of the old crud out. With a new filter to catch what is left in there, I should be ok. Anyway, One thing is for sure, I'll either have to get one of the hose-drain kits, or just pay someone to change it for me next time! Such a hassle w/o the right fittings/hoses. Well lessons learned.
The good news is that my oil pressure is back up to 70-75 at idle. Does not appear to be any leaks (not that I could tell with all that spilled oil) I'll have to do some clean up soon, but I'm spent for tonight.

Did you run the engine 5 minutes first? It's much quicker and easier when the oil is warm.

Yeah, I ran the engine a few mins first, but it didn't seem to help too much. If I had a hose/valve already installed it would be a 10 min job, just have not ordered one yet. It will be next on my list! Then I'll have to wait til my next oil change to install it.

Ran the boat today. All is well. Oil is clear and clean. Guess I got all/most of the old stuff out ok.
Oil pressure leveled out at about 60, 45 or so at idle.
After messing w/ the water temp connections, the temp gauge even works!
