hi guys;

have been die hard q-j fan but have to give in.

has any one switched to the edelbrock and how do you like it? how much trouble was it?

would the edelbrock be better than a holly, any pros or cons welcome

this would go on a "89" S R 230 week ender with a bravo III

like the idea of something new. one problem might be the hight over all. the nut that hold the flame arrestor just touches the engine compartment cover. not sure would have room for spread bore adapter.

add a 1X2 strip of teck at the bottom of your cover. Maybe a 1X4 so the new 454 will fit:)

need to keep **** pit floor level to walk on.

could remove the plastic cover that goes on top of the flame arrester if had to.

I did it on the car in my Avatar. It has a 350 and not the big block however. When you go from a spread bore to a square bore carb you may or may not have enough "meat" around the edges of the gasket. So it is not accurate to say you definitely need an adapter. I did not need one. I made the switch about 8 or 9 years ago and love it.

Here comes the fun! ;) That's like asking which is better Ford or Chevy? You think there might be a few biased opinions? (The only biased ones are the Ford fanatics. Everyone knows Chevy is better. :D ).

Ford owns Chevy, even God knows it. Now he can't take any of your advice on the carb seriously! Lol. :joyous:

Side note: if the height really end up being an issue, you could always get a new intake if needed. The Edelbrock RPM series are good matches for the RPM-range we operate in.

Do you "have" to get rid of the Q-jet? If not, keep it. It will out perform a Edelbrock or Holley.....

might have to do that. i think if the adapter plate was not over 3/4" i could squeak by.

i know the Q J i have needs to have the throttle body warp taken out and need butterfly bushings. like a dummy i gave my jig away thinking i'd not ever have a carb or work on any.

Not sure that I agree. I don't generally see much difference in the performance of a Q-Jet versus the Edelbrock/Holley. They are just slightly different designs which are all tuned to give the same result. I'd say the Edelbrock is the easiest to tune simply due the ease of changing out springs/metering rods/accelerator pump. As far as the actual operation of the engine, I really don't notice much difference in the boats I've driven with a Rochester, Q-Jet, Edelbrock, or Holley. It's not like we're tuning to the edge of performance here like with a drag boat or race car, it's a cruiser/runabout.

The Q-Jets are great when they are properly tuned, but it take a lot of knowledge on how to tune it to be able to get it right. The best thing about the Q-jet are it's small primaries which generally makes off-idle throttle response pretty snappy, but changing out metering rods/etc is a pain because the top has to come off. It won't "outperform" anything, as they can all be tuned for whatever performance you want. Secondaries on the q-jet are vacuum-driven just like the Edelbrock as far as the air valve is concerned, so there's not much difference there.

Just put on the Edelbrock you have and go on. No reason to over-complicate things. If this were a blown 468, we could have more of a discussion on WOT-performance and mechanical vs. vacuum.

If your q jet is already jetted for the motor you can get it fixed up by Cliff Ruggles. You won't be sorry. Check out cliffshighperformance.com. Or do it yourself with his awesome book. Shows how to get everything perfect. Including things like idle tube removal for cleaning and performance recipes for non stock motors.
Or you could just spend some money and go with something new like you are thinking.

I'm not sure if this info will help you or not. A friend of mine has a boat with twin 454 inboards...replaced the qjets with edelbrocks. The performance was slightly better and the fuel totalizer was reading fewer gph's when on plane.
