7.4L oil filter question

I just purchased a 2000 270 Sundancerw/7.4 Mercruiser power. I want to change the oil and need to find out what filter fits. The existing filter is an oddball brand so I was wondering if a standard chevy part works. The filter is remotely located on the front port side of the engine vertically. Also any idea what the oil capacity of the engine is?

Any filter that will fit a 7.4 will work......
The capacity is about 7 quarts.....
I'd put in six & top it off while in the water........​

If you're going to use an auto oil filter, stay far away from Fram.
I'm debating auto vs marine also - the marine filters are setup to flow more volume of oil, less filtration... Dunno if it makes a difference long term or not.

Anyone know where to buy a oil pan drail with a hose on it that I can run out the back of the transom drain hole? My 350 mag motor had one on it and I loved that thing.. no muss, no fuss..

Give Milodon a call. I run a 10qt Milodon pan which came with a 12 AN fitting for the drain hole plug.. I just bushed this down to 3/8 and had a local hydralic shop make a hose to thread onto it. The only way to drain your oil....

On my remote filter I run a PF2 A/C Delco filter...

I ended up using a AC Delco that was recommended for the 7.4 in a pickup, it fit perfect. Now who's the guy that designed the upsidedown filter placement, damn messy. I'm going to try punching a hole in the top of the filter at the next oil change to see if it will drain back into the crankcase prior to removal.

Also when I used a vacumn pump to extract the oil through the dipstick tube I only got out 5 quarts, is that the capacity? I thought it was more.

In regards to pumping oil out make sure you have the tube down far enough and, you seal /cut off air from going down into dip stick tube this will help return more oil from down under! I ran into the same thing and I had great results from sealing the tube when it's inside the dip stick.

Merc hasn't needed a tube in the dipstick for 20 or 30 years.
If there is a threaded end on the top of the dipstick, all you have to do is use a hose barb fitting on those threads and suck the oil out. The dipstick tube itself goes to the bottom of the oil pan.
