Hi just purchased a 1974 7.5. Now this is a silly question but how do I get the engine cover(cowl)off. Cannot find any way to release it. Thanks

I can't be specific but there should be some sort of latch, may look like a handle or trim.usually on only one end or both.My 50 has one on each end.My latches look like two stubby handles and they rotate to release the cover.
There may be something below the lip the cover rests on.

Hi Spike thanks for the reply. No there aint nothing. Om my 85hp the Mercury badge comes off and the latches are underneath. This one has the large badge but no way to remove that either.

Hi Ray,
If your motor's cowling is metal, then there is a latch nested underneath the rear carry handle.
If your motor's cowling is plastic/fiberglass, there should be a small knob to pull, located front, left of the choke knob.
- Scott

The fibreglass cowl was intriduced in 1975, so it'll be aluminium. There are two levers, one under each side of the rear rear handle that flip down to release the cowl. (31 and 32 on this)
