ok late 60s 7.5 hp and a 1968 9.8 mercury are these pretty much the same motor ?

the 9.8 had no spark so i snatched all the guts out from under the fly wheel of a blown up 1960s 7.5 slapped it on the 9.8 because it all looked the same all the bolt holes and wires and everything matched up....and when i put it all back together the little beast fired up and ran like a new one.. question is am i hurting anything did i just screw somthing up or are the parts on these 2 motors capatable ? 1 is a 64-68 7.5 i think and the other is a 1966-68 9.8 twin

oh and what does the twin meen ?

and why does this old 9.8 have some german sounding name on the front of it ? lol kenchanfer or something like that

Ben,

Kiekhaefer was the original name of Mercury. Carl Kiekhaefer started the company. As far as your original question....if it's running, don't worry. Many different sized engines use the same parts. For instance to get more HP, it may have a slightly larger bore or a different carb, but the wiring and power packs and coils might be interchangeable. Look through Iboats parts forums for what you changed. I'll be the parts are interchangeable. Having not looked at your motor, I'd assume that twin means two cylinder. Is it two or just one?

Bign-
The Merc 7.5 and 9.9 were the same motor, it's the carburetor and reed plate on the 9.9 that is larger/has a larger opening.

Twin means two cylinders and Marc said it right, Mr. Karl Kiekheifer was the originator of the Merc. name.
