Re: 7.5 HP Gamefisher dies, won't start

I got this motor 3 years ago on ebay out of Alabama. Model # 217-588751, serial # 48 006884

I checked to see what seal's your engine used... your model no. is invalid...check again...theres a couple of diffrences between the seal design and retainer on these uni blocks and price as I have discovered. Also a big dif on how easy it is to get the lower bearing out...really need your engine no. 640-xx

Edit, ok I'm taking a guess here that you actually have, Model #217-586751 and if so you should have better luck with getting seals, lower bearing removal will be a breeze as well, older blocks had a seal stop molded in the uni block making bearing removal a PITA, and yes replace the lower bearing for sure...I'm not sure you even need a lock ring on the newer style lower seal:)

MahtyMaht, quite a few of the 7.5's have the lower crank seal that does not use a retaining ring, whereas the upper one does. If this is the case with yours, check my post from this past June/July where I found the correct SKF seal for the lower crank seal (since the original Tecumseh lower crank seal of this design is no longer available). Most of the upper seals, retaining rings, etc., seem to still be available online from the Sears website.

The metal carb tag says 640-23, the next line is Tecumseh, bottom line says 4016. The Sears model number is 217.586751. I sure hope it's not a nightmare. I really like that stupid motor. I was cocktailin' around my shop last night, and made a blockoff plate to bolt on where the carb goes. I ran the piston to BDC, ran my compressor line thru a regulator set at 15 PSI. Air blew right thru it. Did I do it wrong? If I did it right, then I don't see how the durn thang even ran. Do I need to go to SKF to get a seal? Where will I get bearings? Would a short block be a viable way to go?

no shortblocks available, take your engine to a bearing house an get your lower bearing and seal, they can measure it for you there, the upper seal you may be able to get from sears but you would be better off $$ calling vern at certified and just use the sears parts no. do not screw up your retainers or retainer springs on the top end or you will cost yourself more $ sears has flate rate so your 3$ upper seal will cost you another 10 spot for shipping...best to get no. and skip sears altogether if you can.

Also sears has lots of parts listed they don't have and won't have ever....ie piston rings, there going for $30 a set these days from discount marine...

I got all my money back from sears because they sent me a 510319 lower seal in place of a 510105 and there supplier will have no more ring sets, also they refunded my shipping, got to check my card. never the less call certified and save your money.

and according to my Eska files and your engine no. you have one of the last blocks produced.

Tim, thanks for the advice. I ordered 5litres of the Fuchs last night.
I am next racing on the 25th and will report back then.

Where can I get a rebuilt option cheap?

Then I guess the thing to do is take the engine down, make a parts list, and then get Certified on the horn. I guess I have had one of my winter projects defined for me. I really appreciate all the help along the way with this thing, so thanx to all y'all, with emphasis on Tommy2 and the crabmeister. I expect you'll be hearing from me again in the months ahead.
