We jsut bought a 7.5 Ted Williams outboard mototr model number 217-5880 serial number 203988 and I don't know what year it is so that I can try to find a manuel for it. It has a few problems but runs good when it runs. Anybody have any idea of how to find out what year motor I have?

You're missing one number in that model number. Look again.

Then, go to www3.sears.com and enter the number there, in this format:

217.nnnnnn

Substitute a period for the first dash and leave out any other dashes.

You'll find exploded parts diagrams and parts lists. Some parts are available from Sears, still.

For other parts, go to certifiedpartscorp.com, then call the phone number you find there.

I think they have manuals as well, or you can check on ebay. Someone's usually selling manuals for that outboard.

That's a 1972 model. Did you try punching that number into www3.sears.com? The exploded view parts diagrams are very helpful.

Thanks for the year. I will cjeck with ebay to see if I can find a manual. Have any idea as to why this motor will run good for 30 minutes or more then die and won't restart?

Hmm...there are a number of reasons. First, is the impeller working. There should be a light spray of water and exhaust coming out of some holes halfway up the back of the midsection. If it's not there, then the impeller is bad and the engine is getting hot. That that lead to ignition problems on that motor, even though the engine itself is air-cooled.

Another common problem is forgetting to open the air vent on the fuel tank. The engine will run for some time, but then the tank will develop a partial vaccuum that the crummy little fuel pump bladder in that carburetor can't overcome. Thus, the engine dies and won't restart. That's a good possibility here.

On your fuel tank, there will be a vent of some kind. Loosen it before starting your outboard.

If it runs for 30 minutes, then it's probably not a basic fault in the ignition system, unless it's running hot, as I mentioned.

Re: 7.5 hp Ted williams outboard motor

Hello Admiral ! You seem knowledgeable with Ted Williams Motors so maybe you can help me. I have a one cylinder, air cooled motor that I was told was a 7.5 hp ?? The only numbers I can find on it are attached directly to the motor itself. It's a Tecumseh and I believe the Ser. No. is 7739156 and the Model No. is 604 07B. The clutch is not working an it would appear there is a bendixz spring in it that must be broken. I'm looking for a replacement and will be checking with Sears at the sight you mentioned. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Re: 7.5 hp Ted williams outboard motor

it's a 1972. Ii have the same motor that came in an old alumacraft i bought last fall. It came with the original manual i can scan and send u. i just can't figure out what keeps the motor down in the water? i do not see any locks or mechanisms to do that. i see the little shallow drive plate that flips down but that's it. i talked to the guy I bought it from and he says it just stays down on it's own? every motor I've ever owned has locked somehow..........any input?

Outboards only lock down when placed in reverse gear to keep them from flipping up.In forward, the thrust of the prop keeps them down until you hit something in the water, then the motor will kick up and then back down.

Re: 7.5 hp Ted williams outboard motor

thanks, I just realized ( after reading the manual ) that reverse drive on this old motor is spinning it 180 degrees and using it that way.
That's why I thought it was missing a locking mechanism.
It only has forward drive ; mystery solved :)
I will scan and post the manual in case there is a need for it.

I've got the same motor and am hoping you post the manual as I don't have one. If you look at the motor leg you will notice a tab or nub that fits in a groove in the mounting bracket to lock the motor down when you spin it 180 for reverse. Simple but effective! Just finished putting a new tube assembly from the water pump to the exhaust plate as mine had broken due to vibration. Also replaced the seal in the water pump around the drive shaft. Hoping it runs cooler now. Looking to get more info before I fire it up.

CATransplant is right, it's a 1972 and the engine is made by eska. Try going to www.discount-marine-parts.com. they have been helping me with parts for my 1966 sears 14hp. they might be able to help.

If I broke the rules, then you did too! At least I gave some useful info. You just blabbed. I didn't think this forum was for whiners.

I'm wasting my damn time reading a old threads all the way through only to find out it was a hijack!
I think the only two holes that don't work are the eye holes.
