I am trying to check the impeller on an 80 or 81 7.5 Mercury. I just bought the unit from a friend and he stated that the motor did not pump water the last time he started it. He claims he shut if off right away before any damage was done. I know that I have to remove the two nuts to get the lower housing to drop but the Mercury dealer where I live indicated that I would also have to remove the shift linkage before the lower unit would drop and I could get at the impeller. Can someone tell me exactly where I loosen up the shift linkage to allow the lowe unit to drop. Thanks for any help.

Alot of times if they aren't totally familier with the engine, the dealers will always mention the shift linkage. I'm not sure there is a set-screw or release. I believe its a splined type of connector. After removing the two bolts, the lower unit should come apart.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try to let the lower unit down and see if it is connected anywhere. If I can't remove it I'll have to go a different route, if there is one.

The LU should come right off once you remove the two nuts.
