hey guys, new to the site. i just bought a mercury 7.5 serial 5527202, no visible model number that i can find. its black with the thunderbolt ignition.

1) I'd like to know what year it is.
2) it runs, but no pee stream visible so an impeller is the cause( i assume)
3)it doesn't idle much, and i believe gas slowly drips out of the bottom of the carb, so i will need a carb rebuilt kit
4) at wide open, there seems to be a "grinding" noise. only at wide open.. throttle down, no noise.

i will change the gear fluid soon... anything else ya'll can think of? it hasn't been run in over two years. so any help would be greatly thanked..

Re: 7.5 mercury pre-owned

Year is 1980. Replacing the water pump impeller and gear oil is part of the annual service. also check that the telltale (pee stream) hose isn't blocked. Small spiders love to climb into them and make their homes. Use a piece of stiff wire or compressed air to clear the hose. A carb rebuild (and fuel pump) will probably solve the idle problem. As for the noise, that's a difficult one. take the rewind starter off and have a look at the pawls. If they are hitting the flywheel that COULD be your noise.

Good luck and keep posting.

I would also suggest that you do NOT accelerate above idle until you either replace the impeller or clean out the tell tale tube...either way you must have a tell tale to be sure you are not going to damage the engine further. In addition you should NEVER go to wide open throttle without the leg of the engine being in the water (either in a tank or taking the boat to the water and testing it there). Going to WOT using just a flusher hose and without the prop submerged will do all kinds of damage as the balance of the engine is thrown out of whack when there is no load/resistance from the prop. Hope this helps

thank you for the responses.

ok, the (pee hole) was clogged, so cleaned it well, also the hose was clean.

i'm looking for parts, is this site best for parts, or can you put me on any other well reputable site?

how do i find my model number? thanks to y'all i have the year, but can't locate a model number. also my serial is just 7 numbers. some sites ask for 8 digit serials and model numbers. any help for me here?

Your model is Mercury 75, but the serial number is the important one when you are ordering parts. The 8 digit serial numbers were introduced in 1986.
