7 hp Eska runs only full Throttle, will not idle

I pulled this 7 hp Eska motor from the trailer my uncle was taking to the dump. He said he could not get it to start years ago, so it sat in his garage. He has almost no mechanical ability so i thought I hit the jackpot. I did. I got it to run.

The top tank is full of rust so I have by-passed it and am using a 6 gallon plastic with a new fitting, since it seems it can use either. I am running 32-1 since 24-1 oils up the plug so bad. I can not read the model number (its gone) but can read the serial number. From pictures I have seen it looks to be from the late 70's.

To start it, I pump the bulb till gas gets to the float, then choke it tight, pull twice, with the trottle off. Then open the throttle full and open the chokefull and two pulls usually starts it. It has to be in gear and it chugs to life and starts moving the boat. It sputters and shakes till it is at full RPM and we are screaming down the lake at 12-15 mph in our 14' boat. It would run all day like that if my arm could stand it. I can't let off the throttle even a little bit or it bogs down and wants to stall out.

I have adjusted the screw on the bottom and it is very touch-y. Going between running out of fuel and stalling with a 1/4 turn. I have no manual and i seem to have the rich lean adjustment okay since the spark plug is pretty clean now on 32-1. The choke adjustment springs and clips are broken so i have to do that manually now.

Is this a Reed Valve thing. or should I get a carb rebuld kit. I understand 4 Stokes, I don't have much experience with 2 strokes. But I am willing to learn.

Any help would be appreciated. Andrew

it needs a carb rebuild. sounds as if the idle jets are clogged. That is why it will only run at full throttle. I would get a kit to replace the float as well. float maybe sinking causing too much gas to get in.

I mention the Tecumseh powerhead in an atempt to date your motor.
67 7hp used a V58 Tecumseh powerhead.68 uses a AV600,
69 AV750 all at 16:1. 70,71 use AV750 at 24:1 72-74 use a AV817 last year for the 7hp is 74 70-73 motors use 24:1 32:1 for 74.if BIA certified TCW oil is used.BIA certified oil is recomended for all types of air cooled 2 stroke motors In my after market service manual and on the present TCW3 rated containers.
This includes everything from weed eaters to aircooled outboards.

Re: 7 hp Eska runs only full Throttle, will not idle

I took the Carb off this weekend and have more questions than answers.

"float maybe sinking causing too much gas to get in." The float is light as a feather and looks good. The spring looks good as do the seals. The brass tube that looks like the fuel pick up was not on the deep side of the bowl. (That may explain why it would cut out going thru large waves.) Is is critical as to what dirrection the float bowel sits?

It runs better and i can get it to slow down, but as i get close to an idle it just dies. It also seems to surge, but i never see the throttle open or close. There only seems to two adjustments. the one at the bottom of the float bowl, and the rich-lean, it that it?

The rich-lean adjustment only wants to ride in one spot because of wear on the screw near the handle. Should i remove the long handle and spring so i can lock the adjustment or will it vibrate out?

I want to buy a carb kit but i can not find anything that identifies the powerhead let alone the outboard.

Its running better and thank you for your help so far.

the rich lean screw is the idle mixture. Not sure on yours, but most have a spring under them to keep them in place. you will need to be able to adjust that to get the idle correct. Will it not move or do you have to hold it in place? If you have to hold it in place do so just to see if it will adjust out. Keep in mind it takes a minute to change the mixture once you turn it. It is not instantaneous.
