'70 60hp Evinrude Fuel Problem?

Got my '70 up and running, but it has no power past part throttle, and won't get anywhere near proper WOT RPM. Squeezing the primer bulb while running makes no difference. The motor seems to make good RPM in REV, but not in FWD.So far I've done the following....

-Cleaned all 3 carbs, checked float levels. All are parallel to the carb body when inverted.

-Checked linkages and sync according to the Clymer manual.

-Replaced fuel hoses, many were hard and brittle, assumed they are sucking air.

-Replaced the fuel pump.

-Fuel tank and hose work fine on another boat, but it's a 25 Johnson. It gets 5000 rpm @ WOT.

-Checked spark on one cyl. 1/2" blue pretty spark.

- Checked point gap and condition. Points are pretty and clean, gap is .010 as per sticker under flywheel.

- Timing advance goes up to the rubber stop in both FWD and REV.

Performance was OK at this point, but not REAL good. I went back and checked the clamps on my new fuel lines and snugged them up a bit. It also looked as if the line from the pump to the carb inlet was pinched by the silencer, so I changed the routing to remove the restriction. Now the motor is much worse????? :(

I don't see any difference in the powerhead linkage action between FWD and REV, and it seems like it should act the same in either. Is this true?

Trying a compression check next but I'm not sure what good readings are. I'll compare what ya'll say to what I see.

:( Any other suggestions?

Get's more interesting...I went to check the spark to all 3. Pulling #1 and #3 wires doesn't make a big difference in how it runs. Pulling #2 kills the motor. Hmmmmm??

#1 and #3 are sick or dead.

You didn't say what spark you got, if any, from them.

Your compression test should show some interesting results. Each cyl. should compress over 100 psi, but the important number is the difference between high and low cylinder. It should not exceed 10psi.

When you redid the carbs, did you put each one back in its original location?

Let us know what you find, in this thread. :)

Re: '70 60hp Evinrude Fuel Problem?

Spark was good on all 3. Pretty 1/2" blue.
All carbs placed in original position...I didn't want to make too much of a puzzle of the linkage rods :D .

Compression was 130 to all 3 with 5 seconds of cranking per cylinder.

I got to thinking about fuel delivery and removed the float chamber plugs from each carb. 1&2 had plenty of fuel, #3 was mostly dry. I pulled it and cleaned it one more time just for grins.

Went ahead and purchased new fuel line fittings just to be sure they are good.

I'll give it another water test this evening and see what happens.

I'm still curious about what should happen as each plug wire is pulled on a healthy motor? Will it continue to run but drop RPM, or die?

Thanks!! RR

Howdy, RR.

On a healthy engine, killing any cylinder that is making power will cause an rpm drop. Killing a dead cylinder will cause no change.

Good luck. :)

No change after rechecking #3. I have wet plugs on all 3, but looks like no fire to #1 & #3. Will checking with an inductive timing light tell if these are firing when the engine is running?

Timing light shows spark to all 3 cylinders. Curious?? How much effect will the low speed carb. adjust have on overall performance? I found a post that spoke of adjusting these on the water v. in a tank or on a hose. Opinions?

Thanks again, very dry river rat :(

How many turns out are the low-speed jets (assuming they are adjustable & not fixed)?

Also, when you do the 'pull the plug wire off' test, are you doing it at idle?

Carb's were at initial setting of 5/8ths out...spark test @ idle.

Re: '70 60hp Evinrude Fuel Problem?

Carb adjustment was the trick. Don't have a tach yet, but set them as close as I could by ear. Boat runs very well, but a bit rough in gear at idle, and a small flat spot just off idle. I'll order a tach soon and set them by the book. Most likely all will be good then. Thanks for the posts, it really helps to have someone to "talk" to in getting one of these things worked through, and the other zillion or so posts I read contributed quite a bit to this fix too!....

Happy Fishin'....RR :D :D :D
