That's normal, but that is not the shift, that's the throttle. The shift handle is on the other side of the front panel.

Oh boy, what a dummy. I finally found the shift lever (clearly marked fwd./neutral/reverse). Maybe this is my final question...the throttle markings are stop, slow, shift, fast and start. Since it will only go into neutral when the throttle is rotated to the stop position, is that where you put it when starting? Once started, then turn it to shift, put it gear, etc.? Or????

Many thanks again for putting up with all my ignorant questions.

I usually start the 9.5 motors with the handle turned up counter-clockwise to the neutral stop and with full choke, then ease back clockwise to "shift" as the engine warms up.

You can lock the idle speed with the small dial on the side of the base of the tiller handle; that will prevent the motor from cutting out at low idle.

i have 9.5hp evinrude and the reverse lock wont stay lock is that because the spring is broke.
