Had trouble running, lose of power, back firing, time to do and over haul any way. Water pump was worn out, broken bolt here, fuel pump old. Checked the timer base ohms, one leg was dead, the B-D combo.
So , I ve done all the work and replaced the timer base, cleaned carbs, new water pump, all. Now it won't start but its trying, still with back fire. Could the timing be out so far that it won't start. Can anyone give me a course adjustment for spark advance so I can start it to get it fine tuned?

Well, I know I should look before I ask. The Tips in the secret files are great. The Reeves method of timing was stunning to say the least. Just one thing......
still won't start. Back fires, but won't start. Compresion test showed 126psi across the board. Fuel is fresh. Carbs wet with fuel.
Replaced the spark plugs to night, and soddered a bad looking wire connection on the stator plug. Not sure what to do next.... Hate to give in and take it to a mechanic, but tims running out, I need it next week. Any sugestions?

Re: 70 Hp 1980 won't start now

I have gone back through what I've done. I checked the fuel pump, and the pump is supplying fuel to the clean carbs, and the carbs are passing fuel, but found no fuel in top 2 cylinders, plenty of fuel in the bottom cyl.
I've sparyed carb cleaner into the reed valves on the top two, but seeing only minimal fluid being exhausted through the spark plug hole.
I'm thinking the reeds are just glued in place by old fuel residue, unless there is a mechanical reason for the fuel not to be sucked into the cylinder.
Any thoughts?

you can take a pencil, and with the eraser end, slightly push on each reed to free it up, or check it.

are you sure you timed the motor on the #1 spark plug.

then do a link n sinc.

Thanks Chief, I have used the Reeves method to set the time but I have noticed the link and sync discribed in the manual shows the throttle cam rod dimension( the preliminary adjustment) at 4 29/32". This is way back from contact with the cam roller, almost 3/4''. Can this truly be the starting point for the link & sync adjustment?

Re: 70 Hp 1980 won't start now

I see I was miss reading where the throttle cam rod dimension was being taken (the preliminary adjustment). Link & sync checked. Fuel problem in cyl 1 & 2 cleared up with carb cleaner. TDC was off on cyl #1, so I removed the fly wheel and found the shaft key was sheard off. I would not have thought that, I had replaced the key when I re-assembled it after repairs were finished last week.
Timing was out.
Reajusted timing.....it started first turn of the key.
Idle speed a little slow, but runs good at top speed, though mid speed range is rough at times.
