I am trying to get my 70 hp Chrysler (1972? or so) model 707hd running after sitting for a couple of years. The carbs are clean the fuel is new. I had to clean the points a bit and I cleaned and ohmed all the plug wires. I also removed the distributer cap and cleaned it as best I could. The engine starts and runs good. It has a get up and go problem however. When the throttle is opened the engine shudders until just before wide open throttle. It is not backfiring, it just vibrates coming out of the hole until the throttles get opened up. The engine then smooths out and pulls like crazy. I know the carbs are clean, but other than cleaning, all the ignition is pretty old. Before I cleaned the points up the engine would not run at all. Could these points still be causing a problem here?

I would start with simple things first. I would put new spark plugs if you havent already and do a link and sink. when cleaning the carbs did you inspect the needle and adjust the float? My thinking is it could be a weak spark or too much fuel in the mid range but I would not lean out the carb. If the timing is picking up too slow it will cause a rich condition in the mid range - or at least it does in mine. I would check all fuel lines for cracks and leaks and make sure the fuel filter is staying full. It could be a weak fuel pump.
