I have a 72 Starcraft with a 1975 70 HP Evinrude O/B. The motor runs great, starts easy cold and runs fantastic until you stop and try to restart (I like to drift fish for Walleyes and this makes it difficult!)

The motor has new coil pacs and has been through a total tune up. The engine is equiped with electric choke.

I'm not sure if this is an engine problem or operater error. I have tried no choke and choke when hot, with no difference. Sometimes the motor starts and sometimes I kill the battery.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts,
Eric

Hi Nova
Have you tried opening the warm-up throtle with no choke? By doing so you reset timeing to the correct position for starting.

alcan,
Could you please elaborate a little?? I'm great with cars; a little slow yet with outboards. Are you saying to raise the warmup and hold it there or raise it and lower it again?? I think I've tried every variation, maybe I just need to find the right combination.
Thanks,
Eric

Nova

I'm sure he means raise the fast idle lever(Warm-up) a bit(1/4-1/2 way) and hold it there while you try to start it. Raising the fast idle lever advances the throttle and the timing as well, as opposed to trying to start it with the lever down(Idle) position. Gives it a better shot at starting without using the choke. Same procedure when cold, only use the choke also. Also, try pumping the primer bulb before starting, both hot and cold.

Hi Nova
Yes, Rick gives the basic idea. Every motor has its little starting thing. Most will sorta talk to you and tell you what they want. I know I'm nuts. Usually a warm 2 stroke will have enough fuel charge to fire right back up. All the operator needs to do is provide a little fresh air and correct spark timing. I don't know what type controls your using, but opening the trotle a little as rick said will do this. If you go right to choking/priming a warm motor you run the risk of flooding. Now after three good cranks, and you get nothing no pop, (it's not talking to you). You may have to reprime/choke, Three more cranks should pop. remove choke and start. If you do flood out, disconnect fuel line, Open throtle and give three -four good cranks. Pumping the throtle lever (as on an old car) does nothing for a 2 stroke outboard. Keep experimenting with throtle lever settings until you find the start position. Usually with the motor in neutral it is as wide open as it will go. Be carefull cause this isn't always the case.

Re: 70 HP Evinrude Hard Hot Starts

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the advice, as soon as I get my floor back in the boat, I'll have to take it out and mess with it. By the way I'm using a the Stock Starcraft Control. Which leads me to ask one, more question... There is a black knob on the front of the control (towards bow). I've never touched it, any idea what it does??

Thanks again,
Eric

Probably a friction control for the shifter, unless it's the round tachometer hook-up.
