You must be getting good fuel pressure, because the choke is actually a fuel enrichment valve on that motor, and it works off fuel pressure from the pump.
But it is a good idea to rebuild it every few years.
More than likely, the idle mixture screw is partially clogged with gum or debris. Or there is an air leak between the carb and the intake manifold.
Easy to remove and flush, but the carb may need disassembly and cleaning.
If you are going to do the work yourself, start by getting a Clymer Force repair manual, then do the idle mixture screw, or a complete carb rebuild.
Then start in on the maintenance items like, fuel pump diaphragm, water pump, new fuel lines, etc.
