I have a Johnson 1993 70 hp outboard motor that will not start. It don't appear to have any fire at the plugs. Is there some way I can bypass the switch, shifter and kill switch to make sure these things are not holding me out from starting? Or any other idea will be greatly appreciated..

thanks

Disconnect the big wire harness connector and jump the starter solenoid to start the engine. Disconnecting the main harness removes the harnes and controls from the system. You will need to choke the engine or run it out of fuel to stop it since the ignition switch and kill switch will be disconnected.

Re: 70 HP Johnson will not start

Thanks for the postings. I tried disconnecting the main coupling connector at the motor and jumped the solenoid. The motor still would not crank and also did not have fire at the plugs. What else can I test or try. I havent looked at the electical testing link yet so maybe it will be helpful. Thanks....

I would try replacing the solenoid, sounds like the solenoid went bad, would be a inexpensive way to start.

I also have an 1988 Johnson 70HP Motor that will not start, I am thinking that this is the same problem, a problem with the keyed switch. I have no spark on any of the three plugs, So you are suggesting that I disconnect the main wiring harness that enters the motor housing with the fuel line? then what wires do I put a jumper on on the starter solenoid?

If the solenoid was bad would it cause the plugs not to have fire? I can touch the two terminals on the solenoid with a screwdriver and the engine turns over good. This is with the big cable on the motor unplugged.

No, if the starter spins when you turn the key, then the solenoid is working.

gbkane, put a jumper wire from the large solenoid post with the red battery cable to the small solenoid post with the yellow/red wire. that should actuate the solenoid and engage the starter.
