Hello all, I have a 1969 70 Hp Chrysler Outboard Model: 7071 which the original parts catalog references Champion L-19-V standard spark plugs. Needless to say, these plugs are not available due to the year of the motor and the L20V are supposed to be the compatible plug. I also have a repair manual which references Champion L20V plugs (button style with no gap). A cross reference to these plugs are the NGK BUH plug of which are also button style plugs. I have heard a lot of bad things about the button type (no gap) plugs requiring more voltage to fire and they dont seem to run, or last as long, as the standard (gap) plugs. I never noted what the gapped plugs were that I removed from the motor shortly after I got it and replaced them without questioning the newer style plugs when I rebuilt the motor. I am on my 3rd CD unit in this motor and I want to go back to standard plugs that you have to gap. All my research online has led me to the Champion L82C (std) or the Champion QL82C (resistor) plugs but I dont know the difference between resistor or standard plugs. Maybe resistor plugs are a newer technology (which was probably not around in 1969) so I just want the correct best plug for my setup. I have a 1968 17 foot Lund aluminum boat which is used strictly for fishing so I do run the motor at very low speeds occasionally for trolling. Does anybody out there know what "standard" spark plugs I should be using in this motor? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.
