Re: 70 hp rpm loss

I was out again today 1/24 boat started and ran great ran about 4 miles to my first spot. after about 45 min. went to go somewhere else and motor would not turn over 35oo. Pulled temp sensor restarted same. Pulled plug wires whle it was ideling top cylinder strong spark, middle cylinder NO SPARK, bottom weak spark??? while trying to idle todards ramp after about 30 min of ideling you could feel the spark come back? Would run full throttle, fished near ramp rest of day and boat ran fine. Checked the spark at ramp while running in the water and top cylinder very strong and middle and bottom are a lot weaker, by the jolt i was recieving. What should I check for this intermittent problem with only thelower cylinders, Powerpack and coils new in oct, wires new 2 weeks ago?????

you might have a bad powerpack.
when its warmed up they can get weaker and weaker.
try doing a test in the driveway.
warm up the motor and heat up the pp with blowdryer.
this should show the weak pp.

Can a dealer test a Power Pack and tell if it is working properly while it is not on the boat???

i think if it was the ignition switch then you wouldnt have spark at all. it should shut down the motor.
and it should be easily byepassed if you unplug it.
run the motor in the dark and see if you see som sparks flying of your coils.

my bet is that your pp is bad and if its a new one like you said i would ask your dealer why this is happening.
could be bad luck or may be something else.

I bought a spark tester and made a remote starter today. All sparks were strong blue gapped at half-inch, cleaned all coil grounds also noticed there was not a washer on the ground on the powerpack so i put a washer between the ground wire and powerpack, Ran great on the muffs guess i'll give here a try next week and see what happens!!!

Re: 70 hp rpm loss

Well, Javelin 353, I have a 76 70hp RUDE with the same ghost. Cold it sparks great, run it wide open and get it warmed up and spark gets intermittent. I have replaced, coils, power pack, stator, timer base and every thing inbetween. I now have a replacement flywheel since my mechanic feels that it is possible to have a week magnet in the flywheel that looses magnetism when hot (a new flywheel is $810) but thats the only part i havent tried yet. Good luck on your search, DHadley and Walker and Paul Noir will be helpful sources, I personally would verify the stator before replacing the powerpack since a bad stator will take out a powerpack.
