I have a 1978 evinrude 70 hp, no tilt.. I have been looking trying to find out what years omc factory tilt will interchange with mine, with no luck. There is a factory tilt available locally off of a 1989 70hp, looks the same but 11 years newer would like to be sure it will fit. No reference of tilt and trim in my factory service manual, maybe it wasn't an option in 78?

Hoping someone here will know about this.. Thanks..

Re: 70 hp tilt trim interchange

I also have a 1978 Johnson/Evinrude 70hp outboard and added T&T to it. The unit your looking at will fit your motor just fine as will any unit from a 70 - 150hp from 1978 to 1995. I believe 1996 is when they changed to the 'Fast' unit that will not fit. You will also need a relay box, cabling, T&T switch. You will also need a sensor and gauge if you want to add a T&T gauge. The unit your looking at should have a 2 wire motor which will effect the how the relays need to be wired. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply!! I hoped it will work, the guy says he has all the componants with the package, I'll have to check it out. As far as mounting, are there just the 4 bolts at the bottom of the swivel and 2 at the top? Thanks

Be sure to use a 2x4 or something to block up the motor in addition to the vacation lock. Just pull out the bolts that mount the Assist Shock assembly and take the port (left) transom bracket loose after removing the tilt tube nut and motor mounting bolts from that side. You should then be able to slip out the existing assembly and insert the T&T unit in its place. Put sealant or grease on the screws when reassembling to enable removal later should that be needed. You will need to remove the trim adjust rod also which will disable the reverse lock.

Inside the left transom bracket you will find 2 raised bosses with drilling location marked on each. This is where the T&T sensor mounts. Drill and tap for 1/4x20 screws if you plan to use.

Oh, that is the whole transom and swivel bracket assemblies, not just the T&T unit. That should make it easy. Should fit, but not positive. The only problem I see then is the T&T relays where mounted on the ignition bracket in 1989 and not in a separate box. At least they were on the complete 1989 ignition electronics I purchased and installed on mine. You may have to figure something out for this. A relay box can be had on Ebay. You will need a 2 wire one. It is normally mounted above the top carb. I gave away the ones I had to another Iboater.

On further thought, you should make sure you get the relay assy. off of the ignition bracket. These are fully sealed with liquid electrical tape so should be able to wire tie to some convenient point. Also, TH Marine makes a very nice T&T switch assy. that replaces the plastic top cap of the throttle/shift lever on your controller should you need if the one you get from him does not work out.

Hey guys just started rebuilding my 78' 70hp Johnson outboard and want to add Tilt/Trim unit instead of the standard hydrologic tilt mechanism. Where can I find one?

I used one on my 78 stinger 75hp from the late 80's. Fit with no issues. I did have to buy 2 relays and build a wiring harness myself. I also have a newer control box with 3 wire trim switch.
