Get model numbers. Compression checks before purchase a good idea, as you suggest -- might take a spark tester with you as well to see if ignition needs to be worked on before use. On the 70, see where the tell-tale elbow and hose is located and take a pic or make a note.
Thanks, great advice! Is that the elbow and hose for the VRO pump you're mentioning? What should I be looking for there in terms of its location? Thanks

Nope.------Look for the fitting on the block where the TELLTALE hose ( water pump indicator ) attaches.-----It was on the side of the block but should have been moved long ago.-----Nothing to do with VRO.

If going for the 70 or 90 HP, install a tach and prop the motor right to run at least middle of it's min-max wot rpm range factory stated although max rpm would be preferred to plane faster the combo with 4 up. If with fewer boaters on board throttle less while keeping an eye on the tach for the motor not to overrev.

I see now, should be relocated to the top of the block, got it thanks.
