I have replaced the starter with a used one. The first two times I took it out it worked fine but now it wont start. I pulled the starter out and that is working when I jump it but when I put it back in then it will engage the flywheel but it wont crank the flywheel over to start it. I have a new battery in and its not the connections. What else can I do to it?

Thanks,
tony

It could be a bad cable. Sometimes they can corrode inside the lug where you can't see it. Try bypassing them with jumper cables. If they are good try jumping the starter solenoid. If still no go have the starter tested at your local auto electric shop. They can rebuild it if needed.

I back out the bolts that are holding the starter into place so the starter wont hit the flywheel, kept everything else hooked up and when I turned the key the starter engaged and turned just fine. Then I bolted the starter back into place and it wont turn the flywheel now. Battery is new, reading 12.5 volts and all connections and cables look good.

Thanks,

sounds like the wrong starter, or you may have to shim it out.

check the number of teeth on the new starter motor gear and check it has the same number on the old one.. i made a mistake like this a few years back on a 35hp evinrude and found that when the starter was bolted on tight, the extra tooth caused the starter to lock up.. when loosened slightly the extra tooth would not cause the same problem.

1 extra tooth can cause a whole lot of problems, stripping the flywheel and even bending the crank if your really unlucky.. i was!

hope this helps.

Do I need to buy special shims like the ones for a car starter or what can I use? Where can I buy the shims? Thanks for the reply, I will try tonight when I get home from work

the starter seems to be working. the flywheel will not turn either direction and that seems to be why it won't start. Any ideas what the issue with the flywheel would be? It also won't seem to shift into reverse.

Thanks for any help.
