Hi guys! This is my first post, so go easy on a newbie.8) I have 2 questions about this motor. First off, I cannot get the motor to go into reverse. Neutral and forward work fine. Where should I start in trying to fix this?
Secondly, the motors stutters in midrange. It has an excellent idle, and really screams on the top end, but the transition is poor. I am getting ready to go check the plugs and wires, but does anyone know if there is a common problem that causes this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Hunter

Check the timing advance, as you move the throttle the timer base should move smoothly. The timer base is bad about sticking. Reverse, check that you have 12 volts to both shift wires when the control is in reverse with the key on and engine off. If the voltage is there the problem is in the gearcase. If not, its in the control.

Re: '70 Johnson 115 problems.

welcome to the forum.

Good advice from wbblc on the timer base.

One nuther thing...inspect all the ignition wiring that you can get to...look for chafing, split, missing insulation, bare wire...loose connections...sometimes a moving part can chafe a wire and create a fault that only manifests in a narrow range of throttle.

Not sure about your model in particular, but many of these carbs have 3 circuits, idle, off-idle and hi-speed...so carburetor could be an issue here. I'd try to rule out electrical first though.
