70 Johnson idle and oil issues

I recently noticed that my 2000 70 Johnson has been going through a TON of oil (about one gallon every few hours). More recently, I've been having idle issues. Starting the boat has always been a pain, but now it bogs down when I idle and stalls out if I give it gas. The only way to get it to go is to jam it full throttle and it quickly snaps out of it. It also has been smoking a ton and there seems to be a fuel slick behind the boat when I start it up. Is it running too rich? I am not mechanically trained so please keep explanations in layman's terms. Thanks again.

Check for air leaking into fuel system. Air going thru VRO makes it
pump faster and when this happens VRO pumps more oil.
Also check spark plugs, they may be fouled from all the
extra oil.

Do what? Check for air leaks? Follow the fuel lines. When you see a junction inspect it and tighten clamps or replace them if necessary. to check plugs you remove them. But since the engine has probably fouled them from excess oil, replace them (after you've determined why the engine is using so much oil).
