70 'rude rebuild complete - words of wisdom?

Well, after a very costly complete rebuild (I now know more about outboards that I ever thought possible when I started this venture... save for a few things like timings etc...). <br /><br />Tonight I will be re-installing the powerhead on the lower unit and will be dropping her in the water to idle for four hours (YAY!! . It'll just be good to hear her run again... <br /><br />Any how, looking for any words of wisdom?<br />Example, would it be a smart thing to squirt a tiny bit of oil in the cylinders before giving her a crank?<br />Considering I rebuilt the carbs, my assumption would be that I should set the carbs as soon as I get her running and while breaking her in?<br />If so, should I also be doing the throttle pickup timing? (Link & sync already performed)<br /><br />The block boring place I had a rebore done at suggests 4 hours of idling, but nothing of breakin following that? Any suggestions? Alot of care, time and money has gone into this baby, and I want to make sure she purrs for years to come...<br /><br />Thanks in advance.<br />Ben

Your 50:1 at idle for the first 4 hours is fine. Once in the water you can double up. After that follow the E/J recommendations for breaking in a new motor.<br /><br />The bore shop gave you the best info you could get. Since they set the clearance they are the ones to suggest the break-in proceedure accordingly.<br /><br />Good luck!

Ok... So, here is where my confusion steps in, so please bear with me.<br /><br />Getting mixed messages.<br />Manufacturer recommended break in:<br />Manufacturers Oil due to additives: True/False?<br />50:1 Premix plus oil injection<br />Premium Fuel (No Alcohol)<br />10 hours total break in<br />First 2 hours no more than 1/2 throttle changing RPMs every 15 minutes<br />Last 8 hours no more than 3/4 throttle changing RPMs every 15 with occasional bursts to WOT for no longer than one to two minutes<br /><br />Bore shop recommended initial break in:<br />4 hours idle<br />shutdown and cooldown after 1 hour, retorque heads<br /><br />Outboard Recycle Tech Tips:<br /> http://www.obrparts.com/DispTips.asp?ID=1 <br />Also recommends 4 hours of idle, however at the same time says to not run at constant RPM for extended periods of time.<br />Also states that after bringing up to temp, to operate in gear at 1500 RPM (I guess about 1/8 of throttle as I don't have a tach but am planning on getting one ) for 20 minutes, then 3000 RPM (again guessing just a little over 1/2 throttle) for 60 minutes. Then 3/4 throttle for the next 4 hours. Then during the last couple hours of break in, to run at WOT for less than 2 minutes occasionally.<br /><br />So... let me see if I've got this right. Despite the fact that the manufacturer states that for this engine there is no initial break in (idling for 4 hours) I should do this anyways?<br />First Questions: Should it be in gear while doing this, if it should be done at all?<br /><br />Next question, do I follow the "Tech Tip" as listed above, or follow manufacturer recommendations?<br /><br />Seems to me that to prevent glazing of the cylinders, I wouldn't want to idle for four hours, but rather, as the manufacturer states, run no more than 1/2 throttle and change RPMs every 15 minutes?<br /><br />Very confused :S<br /><br />Thanks all in advance... again <br /><br />Cheers,<br />Ben

So just to be absolutely clear.<br />Idle at 4 hours means "exactly" that... in neutral, idle speed... 4 hours???

Yep. On the hose or in the water, doesnt matter. I've even done it an hour at a time. You can rev her up a tad from time to time. The idea is to get the t-stats to open and close. Lets the block warm up and cool off. Everything "settles in" real nice.

Well, get 'er all back together last night. About 3 hours past my estimation didn't get to put her in the water... however, I couldn't resist. So on the hose and about 20 cranks later.... away she went!!!!<br /><br />Thanks to all for the help. Should be clear sailing from here!
