Re: 70 Starcraft Jupiter Restore/Modification

Yeah Jaso, day late and dollar short, seems I've been there before. Appreciate the support, guys like you and your restoration projects are so helpful, especially the pictures. I'm planning out my storage area in the bow, see the factory stuff in yours is sheet metal. I'll fab mine from wood and angle metal attach with rivets. Will continue to post pics as work progresses.. Re: 70 Starcraft Jupiter Restore/Modification

Weather has been great here got a lot done with the help of my fishin' partner. Put in new insulation flotation stuff, couple of new sheets of plywood, all that rivet jazz.. Learned something.. on mid sheet aluminium straps attach the none supported ones first, then attach to hull.. Da... Also here is rough in of anchor storage, bow and made a couple of inspection plates in stern for pump and dirt cleanout. The beat goes on..

Sealed and painted couple of storage boxes which will have swivel mounted seats and built an additional storage locker on the starboard side bow. Not as large as I wanted but it meant another $30 piece of plywood plus a swivel pedestal chair will mount at plywood square location and wanted it to be a 360. Same will go for pilot location in stern, tiller operation. Also put conduit under the floor, battery installs under box seat star and yet to be fabricated electrical panel will go star stern behind pilot.

Re: 70 Starcraft Jupiter Restore/Modification

Todays project was cover for gas tank and working station. Also pulled wire and cut both rear panels. Thinking of painting those black, have a nice piece of metal trim from old motor well sliding doors, will probably use the handles from them too. Gonna start to rain here so painting will have to wait.

Well Kenny, just looked at the first two pages of your project and I'm just an old wood butcher compared to your craftsmanship (new mahogany dash). That is rubber mat picked up at Ace, $4 per foot. Wanted something ribbed so all the little stuff wouldn't roll around. Pray for good weather.

Re: 70 Starcraft Jupiter Restore/Modification

Well today was the day that this whole project has been about, the conversion from closed to open bow. Managed to find a real beater SC at Fairview Marine in Portland, spent the afternoon in the rain pulling, very carefully mind you, the old interior trim. There was barely enough salvage to do the job so there was no margin for error. Fishin' partner and I measured three times and cut once, and then long. Worked out close enough for a fishing boat or government work. Notice had to curf the bow piece to get that gentle bend, the old stuff was sooo brittle was really scary. The rubber inserts weren't much better. While it rained this morning also made some grab rails out of the old Al tubing from the lounge seats, also picked up a couple of bow rails at the salvage yard. Startin' to come together guys.

I'm generally opposed to cutting out the foredeck but you did such a good careful job it should be a touchstone of how to do it. Nice work.

Re: 70 Starcraft Jupiter Restore/Modification

i have actually contemplated doing this myself. im a huge fan of open bow, and we beach alot so its practical. what is not practical is the lawyers fees, child support, custody, alamony, etc when my wife divorces me for buying another boat. so i think this may be a way for me to go. cant wait to see the completed project.

Re: 70 Starcraft Jupiter Restore/Modification

Hi Andy, As a matter of fact, yours was one of the first restoration projects I looked at on iboats. All that inspiration, couldn't wait to do my own, west coast style. Do a lot of what we call combat fishing here, not unusual for thirty boats or so to be fishing the jetty in a daisy chain fashion. Can't really do that sitting behind a wheel, need the tiller. Anyway, learned some helpful hints on how to handle the bow works, will pass those along with the aid of a camera man, would take to many pages to try an explain. Back to doing a little body work, post some more pics later.. WCW

Well don't know if this is going to work, patched over the seam between side and bow sections also filled all previous owners holes. Not required in Or to have lights if not operating at night so filled all those as well. Bondo works for me, hope it lasts on the seams. Tried to get shoots that show how it opens it up.

Re: 70 Starcraft Jupiter Restore/Modification

Finally managed to get that album up, just had to type url manually. It addresses the more technical, if there is such a thing, aspects of bow conversion. Todays project was electrical panel, switches, battery installation, gas tank cover working station. Also installed horn, while I was in the bow played around with some 3/4 inch rubber hose to cover edges of plywood. Split down the middle, made a nice cover until I went to buy enough to finish the job.. a little to spendy so I found this pipe insulation. Whatdya think? Will even cover the rasty salvaged trim. My not hold up very long, but at a buck forty nine a stick, works for me.

Re: 70 Starcraft Jupiter Restore/Modification

Well finally stopped raining, must have gotten 7" here on the beach in May. June didn't start much better.. boat yes .. Got two coats of a top side battleship gray, masked off edges, boxes, bilge accesses, ped sets and storage box with 1 1/2" tape. Painted deck with skid no more, two coats, and now going to let everything dry out for a couple of days. Will do touch up inside and install vinyl and then easyepoxy the exterior.

First coat of top side paint went on yesterday. It's a little cool here so will let it soak for 24, then sand and play it again Sam.
