Really should have minimum 5/16" fuel line throughout on that motor. All the OEM carb and pump fittings are 5/16". May I recommend one of those clearview filters so you can easily see if any air is getting sucked in anywhere and whether rubber bits are still slagging off in the fuel system.

New needles and seats and setting the float should get rid of the fuel dribbling and should help tremendously in eliminating bogging.

Metal cylinder-shaped end of the Electric choke plunger just fits up inside the solenoid. Then as long as the plastic end is properly fitted into the plastic bar spanning the two carbs' choke levers it will stay in place.

thanks I will hook up the choke. so should I not use the 1/4" filter and find a 5/16? it was like 8bux id return it if its the wrong one....a clear fuel line there would be a good idea also will work on all of this and make sure I have a mint runner for next year and some of this year

Hey so I took a look its still leaking, so will look into that. I am also seeing smoke come out the lower carb and ive seen this before I think it always did this after I shut it off. someone xplained thats normal...but why not the top one? anyway just ran it off the dock to 4700rpm and cruised a bit and parked it. choke works now! ready to finish things up here and start putting this little work horse to use

also installed the filter and runs the same, happy to have it

You mentioned that you ran it to 4700 RPM. Was that wide open throttle? If it was, then something is still not right or the motor doesn't have the right prop for the setup. You should get close to 5500 rpm at wide open throttle. If not, you will need to change the prop pitch. Lugging the motor with the wrong prop will kill it fast.

its never seen past 5k on this boat, I will look at the pitch today and post and once I finished the carbs I can make a video. boat is kinda heavy it was wot but i didnt hold it for like 30+second only for like 6 seconds ( it was still climbing) hmmm

Re: 70hp all new igniton still bogs! quick help

ok so tomorrow I will run the boat again, I tore it down and the top carb seat when upside down was flat on the bowl (no springing up and down). reason I knew this was wrong was because the lower carb had a little space to push the float down and it springs up (just a little) so I really hope I did that right it takes me some time to do this job even working fast.

ill check the pitch tomorrow, raise the trim a little since its all the way down almost and see what she does. im not one to hammer a motor of this age and cost to over 5k and hold it but maybe ill try it lol

pics and videos soon

speed edit: top carb is running prime no leakage, the lower one is spitting just a little gas out. ran fine idles fine in gear and out of gear starts easy. going to adjust trim and check pitch and go from there. I just gassed it up going for a spin :D

I think the spec for that motor is 5000 to 5500 RPM, so you are within the range, but it is usually better to be closer to the top end.

I wouldnt complain if it could get another 500rpm for those short burst of raw power but thats all its got. went out for an hour got my separate circuit deck sub amp / 6x9's working and boat cleaned up. finally into service.

:::spoke to soon the damn starter solenoid i purchased a month ago or less took a crap and woulda have left me stranded luckily i last shut off at the dock.

The reason that the WOT RPM is important is that it tells if the motor is overstressed. Kind of like driving a stick shift in way to high of a gear. It really effects the life of the motor. I'm surprised a 70 on that boat with a 13 pitch prop doesn't rev a light higher. Is the time set right? 21 BTDC is a good setting for that motor given todays gas, using the manual procedure, or better yet, the one in the FAQ. Or, since the RPMS are within spec, go boating.

Re: 70hp all new igniton still bogs! quick help

timing looked to be 23* when i put the light on it, the starter solenoid gave out it was a one month old standard from napa....

also I meant to ask how hot should the water be coming out of this thing? I stopped just to check
after about half hour run and it was real hot. it would burn my hand if I let water touch my skin for more than 5 seconds. my johnson 9.9 is just warm to touch. the 4.3 i/o runs around 150f so I figure the water should be about that temp? drove half hour home anyway peeing real hot no problems....water pump and housing are new 2 years ago pump real well maybe 5 hours use or less

did all these problems start happening after your new speakers, sub and stereo? I'm just sayin.... might be something to consider.

hell no this motor was a problem of its own. sub amp and stereo run on a separate battery nothing to do with the motor. going to troubleshoot the solenoid tmrw to prob find something wrong with the ignition switch now :(

One thing to consider with the water pump, is that age not hours running matter. Actually sitting in one position cause them to set. They, whoever they are, say you should replace the impeller every year. I do it every two years. This spring my impeller was two years old when I pulled the boat out of storage for the season. Thought I would start it up on the muffs first, then replace the impeller and fuel pump diaphram. Didn't pump water so I shut it down after 30-45 seconds. Dropped the lower unit and the impeller was in pieces. Tells me that maybe "they" are right some of the time.

As to the starting problem, put a meter on the wire going to the solenoid from the keyswitch and have someone turn the key. If 12VDC isn't there. Trace it back. If it is there, the solenoid is bad or the wire going to ground from it isn't grounded.

Re: 70hp all new igniton still bogs! quick help

considering I ran a good tough few hours through this since its been working I think its cooling ok...maybe I should change the impeller next season. everyone I know never even changes them :S including myself on the 9.9. a couple inline 6's that also have atleast half a decade on it.

plan was to check for 12v ...good call on the ground but it was working being grounded on the I terminal maybe just go straight to the block.

hope to keep this running great, I cant tune this motor by the plugs though like I would my cars

Re: 70hp all new igniton still bogs! quick help

annoyed.... I wanted to go for a quick spin I traced the starter issue to a wire shorting and reconnected it. it was the red wire which pairs off to the rectifier I think and the starter solenoid. anyway no go and I guess no voltage being sent. very strange. will looker over again but looks like im stuck jumping it :S

Re: 70hp all new igniton still bogs! quick help

well well well did a little maintenance lubed up the shifting components cleaned up the wires a bit cut off a piece of metal on the solenoid so it sits perfect on the power head. made sure wires and ground were not bare and working. charged battery, pryed the prongs on the harness connecter just a little put everything back neat and it started up with the key. ran and idles good went out for a lap just fine. almost time to re fuel. I parked it and let it run out of fuel since I will be away from it for about a week or so.

just an edit** the gas is just over a week old and I got a flat low power bog until it started to sputter up - plane and get going good to a top rpm of 4900 held steady (4900 on this tach anyway no clue if its accurate) fussy old mercs cant hold a steady tune? new gas tomorrow
