I'm not mechanically minded. Driving the boat and the motor started to rattle then just stopped. Wouldn't turn over and flywheel wouldn't turn. Put some crc through the plug holes and tried to turn it. Was thinking that it seized. Put a socket and wrench on it and got it to turn. It turns freely for half a turn back and forwards but won't go any further. Could something of broken or snapped preventing it from moving? If this is the case is that better than if it seized? Don't know my next move

The rings are most likely broken, which breaks the piston and ruins other parts. A total rebuild is probably the next step, that is if you want to go that route.

Drop the lower unit in case it crapped the gears and is causing seizure...

Possible that the powerhead suffered an overheat lockup. When the powerhead get so hot, the pistons swell inside the cyls. Eventually, the pistons lock up. When it cools down, the rotating assy may turn again. The fact that yours won't make a full rotation is reason to pull both heads and have a look inside at the rotating assy.
