What is the idle rpm on a 1974 Johnson after warmup? Mine seems like it's idle is way to high, but when i set it down where it seems half way normal when you put it in gear it just coughs and dies, so when i put it in gear have to hammer it to keep it running, the motor runs great plenty of power and plenty of speed then try to put it on the trailer which you can't do at half throttle it just coughs and dies, set the idle back up and it seems to be running about 1/3 throttle or so, any ideas

That engine should idle at around 850 to 900 rpm in gear in water. If your engine has a low end throttle up flat spot ,I would look at the link and synch of your carburetors and or richen the idle mix. This is assuming that your engines low speed idle porting or jets are not fouled with gummy restrictions.

It dosn't have a flat spot as a matter of fact it takes off so fast if someone isn't ready you have to dry all the beer off them, I guess i was just shook up over nothing, it was idleing about 1000 rpm but guess i'm just to used to 4 cycle, thanks for the help i'll just adjust it back like it was.
