I am looking at a boat with a mercury 70hp motor on it. I think the motor is late 1970s model. The boat is 1977 model. Any common problems with these motors, or are they pretty much bullet proof?

I sympathize with your desire for reassurance, TC, but think about what you are asking.

This is a over 30 year old outboard with a completely blank history.

The fact that it has survived and is still in service suggests that it is/was a pretty good outboard.

That is about all the reassurance there is available.

Holy crap, how many times is the same question going to be asked :mad::confused:?

I think this is the third or forth post asking the same thing.

Sorry about asking the same question in a few different threads. I just don't want to miss a good deal. On the other hand, I do want to miss a money pit. I think you guys know what I mean.

2 years ago I bought a 1977 Bomber with a 1977 700 on it and the guy I got it from said it wouldn't run. I had the carbs cleaned, new starter, and solinoid (spelling sucks) put on it and she runs out at 40 mph and I haven't had any trouble out of it since then.
