Hey folks, I just bought a mid 70's Mercury 650 (3 cyl)

Is there supposed to be an air filter or airbox assembly? It's just open carbs. Should there not be something?

I cant find anything on the web about it.

If anyone has a link to an online manual or parts pages, I'd sure be grateful

thanks in advance

Thanks guys.

Its a '75. starts with #426

Only reference I see for an air box is in the service manual pertaining to a newer model.

Anyone know where I can get parts breakdown/exploded diagrams for this motor?

Lot of them on YouTube. For future reference need the whole serial # not just part of it.

I didn't post the whole number - is it wise to do that on the web? I'm wary about internet safety.

Who in the world can use your serial number for anything sinister? Do you cover the license plate numbers on your vehicles? Paranoid or do you want help?

Yes I do. I crop out or cover license plate info, house numbers, serial numbers...never post pictures of myself or family, give out addresses, workplaces etc.
Personally, I think it’s wise, not paranoid.

if you’d like to help, it’s all greatly excepted. However I think a point in the right direction so I can look it up myself might be more productive. Not being smart, but next time I won’t have to ask, and possibly neither will the next guy.

I get blocking out vehicle plates, house numbers etc.. in photo's posted on web...
Not sure an engine serial number can be linked to you by anyone outside an LEO though and even that's only if registering engines is required in your state.. Not all states do that..

Unfortunately, without the whole serial number, the great folks here can only make educated guesses and hope it helps..

But in any event, I can appreciate the caution.

In that case, you can google mercury serial number lookup..
That should give you a few sites you can plug in your serial number and see parts breakdowns that may help you.

Hope that helps you out somewhat! :D

I thought about it. Maybe I’m being a little too cautious. I’ve had some sketchy dudes at my house when I was buying and selling classic truck parts through kijiji. ( canada’s version of craigslist). It seems that everywhere I turn I hear more more about scams here and there and everywhere.

anyway, with that paranoia aside, The serial number is 4261307. I have tried entering it into a Parts search and it appears to be missing a digit. It keeps asking me for one more digit

Put a 0 in front of it. You have a 1975 model 65 hp. there is only a plate in front of the carbs to hold the cowling parts. No air box on that model. Like I said go on youtube many of them there. Because it is made before the mid 80s the parts fiche will be hard to find.

Perfect, thanks very much!

that might explain the difficulty I was having.

With youtube, I was getting mired trying to find that range of years. I was getting lots of 60’s and early 80s 4 cyl Stuff.

Google le was giving me mercury CAR hits searching for air filters

frustrating
